The Altenburg Gera Philharmonic Orchestra combines centuries of musical tradition in the two towns that give it its name. In 2001, the Altenburg State Orchestra and the Gera Philharmonic Orchestra merged to form an orchestra that is an integral part of the Altenburg Gera Theatre. Since September 2020, Ruben Gazarian has been General Music Director of the orchestra, which currently has 71 positions and performs various concert series (philharmonic concerts, student concerts, chamber music) and special concerts at both locations, as well as taking part in musical theatre (opera, operetta, musicals), ballet and drama performances
