Bill Monical became interested in bowed string instrument history while studying music and Viola performance in the early 1960’s which led him to the Violin Making School in Mitterwald, Bavaria. From there he went to London to study with Dietrich Kessler. Returning to the United States in 1972, he worked with Jacques Francais in New York City under the tutorial of Luiz Bellini and René Morel, until opening the business in Staten Island in 1978.
In 1989 he curated “Shapes of the Baroque,” an exhibition of original instruments at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Mr. Monical is a founding member and past president of the American Federation of Violin & Bow Makers, a member of the International Society of Violin & Bow Makers and the Appraisers Association of America.
