After having obtained, in 1987, his diploma from the violin making school in Cremona, Nicolas Chassaing (born in 1965 in Antibes) attends the courses at the violin making school of America in salt lake city.

At the end of one year of study he obtains is "degree of luthier" and he continues to work with Peter Paul Prier, making violins and cellos.
Professor assisting Luthfi Becker director of the “escuela de lauderia de Mexico”during eighteen month he teaches violin making to fifteen students coming from central and Latin America. Thanks to the knowledge of Luthfi Becker he realises a copy of a 17e century German violone for the school museum
Back in Paris in 1993, he is assistant in the workshop of Pierre Causse. Important step in the knowledge in restoration and sound adjustment.
In 1995 he joined Peter Zaret violins in Norfolk Virginia, in charge of the workshop.
Since 1997 he runs his own shop in le cannet on the French Riviera where he makes violins violas and cellos.
He makes about five instruments a year after the models of the great Italian makers: Stradivari, Guarneri del gesù, matteo Gofriller, and gasparo da salo.
Nicolas uses Italian spruce and eastern Europe maple. His varnish is based on amber and others resins in turpentine essence, he usually apply four coats, which takes two months to dry.
Having learned different ways of thinking and making an instrument, you can detect his own personality while remaining very traditional in the style.
Professionals in France, England, United States, Mexico and Japan play his instruments.
He took part in international violin making competition:
-7th in the violin category at the Etienne Vatelot competition in Paris in 1999
-6th with a cello at the “ triennale di Cremona” in 2000
Currently, he is devoted to the making of a violin and a viola in order to take part in the next Etienne vatelot violin making competition in Paris in December 2004.
With his wife Hélène, also violinmaker, they are occupied within their workshop in the restoration, the sale, and the adjustment of stringed instruments.
They also sales accessories and rehairs bows. -

Il continue à travailler au coté de Peter Prier, dans la fabrication de violons et violoncelles.
Professeur assistant auprès de Lutfhi Becker, directeur de la "escuela de lauderia de Mexico" pendant dix huit mois Il forme une quinzaine d’élèves venant d’Amérique latine et centrale.
Grâce aux connaissances de lutfhi Becker il réalise une copie d’un violone allemand du 17eme siècle pour le musée de l’école.
De retour à Paris en 1993 il entre en tant qu’assistant dans l’atelier Pierre Causse. Etape importante pour l’acquisition du savoir-faire français dans la restauration et le réglage des instruments du quatuor.
En 1995, il accepte un poste de chef d’atelier chez Peter Zaret violins à Norfolk en virginie.
Il s’installe au Cannet sur la côte d’azur en 1997 et se consacre dans son atelier à la construction des instruments du quatuor.
Il s’inspire des grands maîtres italiens: Stradivari, Guarneri del gesù, matteo gofriller, gasparo da salo.
Tenant compte uniquement de la qualité de sa production le temps de conception pour chaque instrument varie entre deux et quatre mois, plus deux à trois mois pour vernir (vernis à base d’ambre et autres résines)
Ses instruments sont joués par des musiciens professionnels en France, au royaume-unis, aux Etats-Unis, au Mexique et au japon, et il a obtenu plusieurs distinctions dans diffèrent concours internationaux :
En 1999 : 7eme avec un violon au concours Etienne Vatelot de Paris.
En 2000 : 6eme avec un violoncelle a la triennal de Cremone.
Actuellement il se consacre à la réalisation d’un violon et d’un alto dans le but de participer au prochain concours Vatelot à Paris au mois de décembre 2004.
Avec sa femme Hélène, également luthier, ils s’occupent au sein de leur atelier à la restauration, à la vente, à la location, au réglage de sonorité des instruments du quatuor, ainsi qu’à la vente d’accessoires et au remechage d’archets.
