Christian Rault a été formé à la lutherie classique italienne par Giobatta Morassi à l'école de Cremona après avoir obtenu le diplôme de l'ENSAD à Paris.
Dès son installation en France, 1978, il s'est spécialisé dans la restauration d'instruments des XVIIème et XVIIIème siècles, pour mieux les comprendre, avant de se consacrer à leur construction, dans un esprit d'authenticité historique et de restitution des sonorités.
Cette passion pour les instruments baroques et les sonorités anciennes s'est approfondie avec la redécouverte, dans les années 1980, des musiques de la Renaissance et du Moyen Age. Constatant que les instruments utilisés par les musiciens ne correspondaient pas aux réalités décrites par les textes, les enluminures et les sculptures médiévales, Christian Rault a mis en route les recherches en organologie qui éclairent aujourd'hui sa pratique à l'atelier.
Ces techniques et ces esthétiques anciennes devant beaucoup aux apports extra-occidentaux, c'est tout naturellement que Christian Rault s'est aussi intéressé aux instruments orientaux.
Auteur de livres et de nombreux articles, Christian Rault donne des cours et des conférences en Europe et dans le monde. Organisateur de colloques et concepteur d’expositions internationales traitant d’organologie, il a participé aux projets de reconstitutions scientifiques d’instruments de Santiago de Compostella, Puivert, Lugo, Royaumont et Chartres. Membre de l'ALADFI et de l'association Luthiers sans frontières, il est depuis 1999, le secrétaire de proLyra: Laboratoire français d’archéologie musicale.

Diplomado en escultura del ENSAD de Paris, Christian Rault ha sido formado a lutheria clásica italiana por Giobatta Morassi en la escuela de Cremona.
Desde su instalación en Francia en 1978, se ha especializado en restauración de instrumentos de los siglos XVII y XVIII, en fin de entenderlos mejor antes de dedicarse a su construcción. Llegando así a una restitución autentica de las sonoridades.
Esta pasión por los instrumentos baroccos y la sonoridades antiguas se aprofundió con la redescubierta, en los años 1980, de las músicas del Renacimiento y de la Edad-Media.
Al constatar que los instrumentos usados por los músicos no correspondían a las realidades descritas por los textos, las iluminaciones, pinturas y esculturas, Christian Rault inició las investigaciones en organología, que aclarecen hoy su trabajo en el taller.Como estas técnicas y estéticas antiguas resultan de herencias extra-occidentales, Christian Rault se ha naturalmente puesto al estudiar los instrumentos orientales.
Siguiendo escribiendo libros y artículos, Christian Rault da cursos y conferencias en Europa y en el mundo. Organizador de encuentros y conceptor de exposiciones internacionales en relación a organología, participió a proyectos científicos de reconstituciones de los instrumentos de Santiago Compostella, Puivert, Lugo, Royaumont y Chartres. Miembro del ALADFI y del asociación Luthiers sans Frontières, está desde 1999, secretario de proLyra: Labororatorio francés de arqueología musical.

After obtaining his diploma in instrument making at the National School of Decorative Arts(l’ENSAD) in Paris, Christian Rault went on to study with the renowned luthier, Giobatta Morassi in International School of Cremona.
He established his workshop in France in 1978, specialising in the restoration of instruments of the 17th and 18th centuries. Through this work he developed a thorough understanding of the construction of the instruments and the craftsmanship required to produce their characteristic tones. He has since devoted himself to reproducing historically accurate instruments, looking for authentic sounds.
His passion for baroque instruments and their ancient sonorities was further stimulated by the rediscovery in the 1980s of the music of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. It was clear that the instruments used by contemporary musicians playing music from these periods did not correspond to what was described in the texts, illuminated manuscripts and mediaeval sculptures and so he began his work on organology. This study of the science of instrument making, sound production and classification has given him profound insight into the authentic and original techniques involved in instrument making which can be seen today in his work as a luthier.
These techniques and aesthetics are predominantly derived from non-european tradition and it naturally follows that he also has a great interest in Oriental Instruments.

CR has written numerous books and articles and gives lectures and conferences in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. He organises symposium and exhibitions on the subject of organology and has participated in scientific projects on the reconstruction of instruments of the Santiago Compostella, Puivert, Lugo, Royaumont and Chartres. He is a member of ALADFI and the association Luthiers sans frontières and has been the secretary of proLyra since 1987, the French laboratory of Music Archaeology. -

作为一系列论文及专著的作者，Christian Rault 经常在欧洲和世界各地授课讲学。他同时也组织乐器学研讨会，策划国际展览活动，参与了在西班牙圣地亚哥－德—孔波斯特拉 （Santiago de Compostella） 、法国皮伊韦尔 （Puivert） 、西班牙卢戈 （Lugo） 及法国华幽梦修道院（Abbaye de Royaumont） 等地举行的古乐器科学复原仿制项目。Christian Rault 是法国弦乐器及琴弓制作师技术交流协会 （ALADFI） 及无国界弦乐器制作师协会 （Luthiers sans frontières） 的成员，并自1987年起任法国音乐考古学研究室 （proLyra） 秘书长。
