My mother was an excellent pianist and my father a violin maker.
I started with piano then moved to violin and viola. After the basics at Purcell School I went on to the Guildhall School of Music in London. My teachers included Emanuel Hurwitz, John White, and Detlef Hahn. This training and work as a musician has given me a real love, insight, and practical understanding of the instruments I make.
In 1996 I apprenticed as a violin maker to Nigel Harris for two years. Then followed a further three years of intensive study at the Newark school of violin making. Since moving to rural Ireland I have devoted myself to producing top quality violins, violas and 'cellos .
Inspiration for work is not limited to the old masters, and I have a large number of patterns / designs and templets at my disposal.
The wood I use for making is top quality air dried European tonewood.
My workshop is an old stone farmhouse near Bantry in County Cork.
