Domenico Fantin è nato a Varese nel 1928. Qui ha intrapreso lo studio del violino con il maestro Ariodante Coggi e si è diplomato al Conservatorio nel 1947. Lo studio del violino ha presto risvegliato in lui un grande interesse per il fenomeno acustico degli strumenti a corda. In questo modo si è avvicinato alla liuteria e ha costruito il suo primo violino da autodidatta.

Negli anni sessanta ha aperto il suo atelier a Induno Olona, dove tuttora vive e costruisce i suoi strumenti, dedicandosi incessantemente alla ricerca sonora, pur non trascurando l’accuratezza nei dettagli, la bellezza dell’insieme e della vernice in particolare.
Nella sua lunga carriera di maestro liutaio ha costruito più di cinquecento strumenti secondo la tradizione classica della liuteria cremonese. Costruisce violini, viole, violoncelli secondo un modello personale, ma anche copie o modelli ispirati a Stradivari e a Guarneri del Gesù. Inoltre si è occupato di restauri e della messa a punto di prestigiosi strumenti quali Antonio Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesù, Guadagnini, Bergonzi ed altri.
Alcuni dei suoi strumenti vengono suonati in grandi orchestre sia in Europa che negli Stati Uniti: l’orchestra Filarmonica della Scala di Milano, del Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, la Berliner Philharmoniker, la Chicago Symphony Orchestra, per nominarne alcune.
Tra i grandi solisti ama citare Yehudi Menhuin - che nel 1969 ha acquistato un suo violino - e Uto Ughi che possiede due suoi strumenti.
Da cinquant’anni a tutt’oggi Domenico Fantin pone molta cura ed esperienza nella ricerca del legno di maggior risonanza, nelle tecniche di costruzione e nelle vernici più adatte. Ciò gli permette di raggiungere i grandi risultati di sonorità che contraddistinguono i suoi strumenti.
Domenico Fantin è uno dei 18 liutai contemporanei dei quali Ruggiero Ricci suona uno strumento nell’album The Legacy of Cremona inciso nel 2001.

Domenico Fantin was born in Varese in 1928. He began studying the violin there with Maestro Ariodante Coggi, graduating from the Academy of Music in 1947. Playing led to a serious interest in the acoustics of stringed instruments and the art of violin-making, which in turn led to his building his first violin – entirely self-taught.

In the 1960s, Mr Fantin set up his atelier in Induno Olona, where he still lives and works, devoting himself unceasingly to the quest for the ideal sound, but without neglecting details and the beauty of the instrument as a whole, and the varnish in particular.
During his long career, Domenico Fantin has built more than five hundred instruments, following in the classic tradition of Cremona. He makes violins, violas, and cellos according to his own design, as well as copies of instruments by Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù and models inspired by them. He has also restored and set up instruments by prestigious makers including Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesù, Guadagnini, and Bergonzi.
Domenico Fantin’s instruments are played in major European and American orchestras, including the La Scala Philharmonic (Milan), the Orchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo (Naples), the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and many others. Mr Fantin is proud to have made instruments for great soloists like Yehudi Menuhin – who purchased one of his violins in 1969 – and Uto Ughi, who owns two of his instruments.
Fifty years of care and experience have gone into Domenico Fantin’s search for the most acoustically resonant wood, the perfect construction techniques, and the most suitable varnish. All these contribute to the fine sonority for which his instruments are renowned.
He is one of the eighteen contemporary makers whose instruments Ruggiero Ricci plays on the CD The Legacy of Cremona (2001).
