Boris de Granda

Boris Odio de Granda graduated from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in 1986 with a BFA in advertising design, and minor in studio arts. The following years were spent pursuing a career in marketing, including employment by (Fortune 500) Ameritech Publishing, as well as serving international freelance clients in Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This career direction however became artistically unrewarding as computer technology entered the art studio, and Boris began searching other outlets for his creativity.

Eventually the field of violin-making was explored, through his admiration for his father Alvaro, maestro and Assistant Concertmaster of The Cleveland Orchestra (now retired). Reflecting upon an encounter with the highly acclaimed violin expert William Moennig Sr. while still in high school, Boris recalled the eminent luthier noting the strong balance between focused technical skills and free artistic spirit that makes an ideal combination for a luthier. Discovering he could combine many of his own interests (science, aesthetics, cultural history, and music) into one project, Boris realized his passion and began to pursue violin building.

Accepted into the esteemed Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City, under the directorship of Peter Prier, he was soon hired into the adjoining restoration workshop as well. In his fourth year, Boris accepted an invitation to join the school’s faculty, completing his student requirements as he began instructing the varnish program. Following graduation, Boris spent two more years teaching and exploring varnish from an alchemically purist’s point of view. His research into using traditional ingredients and methods earned him an invitation to speak at the Vernix2000 Varnish Symposium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In 2001 Boris relocated to Southern California, opening a private atelier to concentrate on building fine concert instruments for caliber musicians.
