Andreas von Niederhäusern

, Lucerne, Switzerland

Born in Lucerne, the son of a far-flung family of violin makers (Berlin, Hradec Králové and Lucerne), Andreas von Niederhäusern learnt the violin-making trade in his parents’ family business in Berlin and at the violin-making school in Mittenwald. In the years that followed, he worked in a number of workshops including in Regensburg and The Hague. There he was able to broaden his knowledge and skills in the restoration and repair of string instruments and study the works of classical European maestros from Italy, France and Germany.

After acquiring his M.A., Andreas von Niederhäusern became the fourth generation to run the family business, which was founded in 1909. He took over from his mother and has run it ever since, with the help of two employees.

His main focus is the repair and restoration of classical string instruments and bows. His list of clients ranges from four-year-old schoolchildren, trained amateurs and enthusiastic hobby musicians to orchestra performers and soloists.

For many decades, his firm has also specialised in double basses, particularly in challenging restoration work and individual modifications tailored to clients’ wishes.
