Brian Newman, sole director of Winston-Salem Violins, majored in music before entering into violin making. After finishing the requirements of the Violin Making School of America he graduated and began work in 1990 restoring violins under his master Rene Morel as an employee in the shop of Jacques Francais Rare Violins.
In 1995 Mr. Newman left to open his own premises. After a short visit to Winston-Salem he concluded they needed a violin maker and that the city offered an excellent combination of lifestyle and excellence in the arts.
Six years later Winston-Salem Violins has settled within a fine Victorian house. Here rare violins, dating back to as early as the 17th century are cared for and available for sale. You'll find Mr. Newman working with techniques passed down through the centuries, master to apprentice, as has always been the tradition within the violin making craft.
