Thomas Egan
Thomas Egan was inspired to become a bow maker by a life-long love of music. Luthiers can be found in his lineage as early as 1790. He began formal training in music at the age of 7. Studying a variety of instruments, he went on to win three gold medals for violin playing. His education also encouraged a broad variety of interests including design and engineering.
Mr. Egan continued to pursue these passions and went on to learn the art of violin making at the Violin Making School of America. He was awarded the title of Luthier in 1987. While in violin-making school, his background in engineering and design engendered a deep fascination with bows.
After studying in a series of well-known shops, Mr. Egan had the opportunity to work under the great master, Hans Weisshaar. While in the employ of the firm, he was the conservator of the internationally renowned Weisshaar Bow Collection, an assemblage studied by connoisseurs from around the globe.
In his twenty years of exploration of the subject, Mr. Egan has amassed a huge database of detailed measurements, photos, and study castings of great bows. This enables him to reproduce the look, feel, and playing characteristics that artists expect.
Many renowned musicians have commissioned his work and use his bows on the concert stage today. They also eagerly seek his restorative magic when bow tragedy strikes. He enthusiastically collaborates with players who wish to acquire an example of his artistry.
