Trudy Egan

Trudy Egan showed an early interest in string instruments. As a five year old, she studied cello at the Hartford Conservatory. While continuing to study music, her attention broadened to include instrument making. Her father, an amateur of instrument repair, encouraged her in this pursuit. He arranged for her to study viol making with Harold Westover, who became her dear friend and mentor. Mrs. Egan and her dad, together, attended instrument making workshops led by Karl Roy at the University of New Hampshire. She completed her first treble viol during her early teens.
After graduating high school, Mrs. Egan worked in a general music store, learning basic violin repair. Her teacher there suggested pursuing further education in the trade, so she headed West to attend the Violin Making School of America in Utah. She completed the four-year course in construction, art, identification, and tone, and graduated in 1988. Mrs. Egan worked in several respected shops before opening Vita Dolce Violins with her husband, Thomas, in 1997.
Mrs. Egan now concentrates on sound adjustments, restoration of fine instruments, and historically respectful varnish restoration, as well as making violins and violas patterned after Italian classics. She is privileged to maintain many instruments by the great Cremonese and Italian masters and to work with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, respected freelance musicians, and up-and- coming young musicians. She would be happy to consult with you in order to bring out the most your instrument has to offer.
Mrs Egan retired from violin making in 2012 and is now a registered nurse.
