Ulf Kloo

, Sweden

  • I was born in Sweden, and started playing string instruments in my teens. I soon built my first
instruments: mandolins, lutes and a nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle). I got my violin making education at the Scandinavian Violin Making School in Leksand 1986 – 1990. Urs Wenk-Wolff and Andrea Laber were head teachers, and our guest teachers included Sam Zygmuntowicz and Wilhelm Brückner.
Established my own workshop in Karlskrona, Sweden, in 1990, where I worked mostly with repairs and sales, but found time to build quite a few instruments too.

In 2010 I moved with my family to Servian, between Béziers and Pézenas in Languedoc, in the South of France, and now focus almost entirely on making new instruments.
My instruments have been exhibited at the Triennale in Cremona 1997 and 2009, at the Royal Academy of Music in London 2004, the Concours Etienne Vatelot in Paris 2011 and Violas 2012 at the Conservatory of Paris.
Kloo violins and violas are played in symphony orchestras / opera houses, by several section leaders, as well as by freelance musicians and advanced students.
