Martyn Bailey has over 40 years experience in the violin family restoration trade. He served his apprenticeship as a violin repairer/restorer at J P Guivier & Co Ltd Violin Dealers of Mortimer St. London W.1. under the instruction of the then ‘workshop foreman’ Roger E. Dawson. He stayed at J.P. Guivier until 1976 having briefly ran the workshop after Roger Dawson left to work for Thomas Martin and Jack Pamplin and shortly after Thwaites & Co. at Bushey. After leaving J. P. Guivier he became self-employed in his own workshop at Shooters Hill, London predominately working on violins, violas, cellos and double basses for professional musicians of the London Orchestras. He remained there until setting up a new workshop in 1979 with Roger Dawson on the banks of The River Thames at Rotherhithe, London and continued with the same clientele base. He remained working with Roger Dawson until early 1990 when he moved to France. Returning to the U.K. in 1999 he was invited to join Roger Dawson in his Greenwich workshop where he remained until 2004. In 2002 he became incorporated as Martyn J Bailey Luthier Ltd and now has premises at Sible Hedingham, North Essex, UK.
