Thérèse Girard

A trained violist, Thérèse Girard received in 1980 a Canada Art Council grant to study at the International School of stringed instruments making in Cremona, Italy (I.P.I.A.L.L.). In 1984 she obtained her diploma under Wanna Zembelli. While in Italy, she also studied bow-making with Maestro Giovanni Lucchi. In addition to making and restoring stringed instruments and their bows, Thérèse Girard specializes in the engraving of frogs and buttons, a technique learned from Master Jeweller (Aristide Tira). In 1992, she was commissioned to make a cello bow to be part of the permanent collection of the Canadian Museum of Civilsations. Thérèse Girard works closely with luthier Jean-Benoît Stensland. Mc Gill University owns in its collection a baroque quartet from their making.

Thérèse Girard, altiste de formation, obtient en 1980 une bourse du Conseil des arts du Canada pour étudier à l'École Internationnale de lutherie de Crémone, en Italie. Elle obtient son diplôme en 1984 avec Wanna Zambelli comme principal professeur. Durant ce séjour en Italie, elle suit également un cours en facture d'archet avec Giovanni Lucchi. En plus de la fabrication et de la restauration d'instruments du quatuor et de leurs archets, elle se spécialise dans la ciselure des hausses et boutons d'archets, technique qu'elle acquiert auprès d'un maître joaillier (Aristide Tira). En 1992 le musée des Civilisations du Canada lui commande un archet de violoncelle qui fait maintenant partie de la colleciton permanente du musée. Thérèse Girard travaille en étroite collaboration avec le luthier Jean-Benoît Stensland. L'université Mc Gill possède dans sa collection un quatuor d'instruments baroques de leur fabrication.
