Born in Saitama, Japan, in 1973, Wataru Shinozaki holds a master’s degree in Engineering from Sophia University, Faculty of Science and Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
While working as an engineer at a precision equipment manufacturing firm, he developed an interest in making violins.
In 2004, Shinozaki enrolled at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria di Milano to specialize in the construction of stringed instruments, completing the course and obtaining a diploma in 2008, and went on to obtain the school’s diploma in restoration of stringed instruments in 2010.
He studied violin making under the guidance of Paola Vecchio and Luca Primon, varnish application with Marco Imer Piccinotti, and instrument restoration with Gabriele Neguri.
During his time at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria di Milano, he augmented his studies of instrument making, repair and restoration with Martino Ius in Milan, as well as with Lorenzo Frignani in Modena.
Wataru Shinozaki was awarded the bronze medal at the 1st Concorso Nazionale di Liuteria (Giovani Liutai category) for a viola he made in 2007.
In 2009, he obtained a diploma for participating in an instrument restoration master class with Carlos & Giancarlo Arcieri at the Accademia Perosi in Biella, northern Italy.
He returned to his native town of Namegawa, Saitama, in 2010 to open his own studio, Atelier Luthier SHINOZAKI.
He is a member of the Violin Society of America (VSA), as well as the KANSAI String Instruments Makers Association.
He is a founding member and first president of Japan Master Violin Makers (JMVM), a group of violin makers and bow makers in Japan.
