Jean-Benoît Stensland

Jean-Benoît Stensland began his apprenticeship in Montreal under luthier Antoine Robichaud. This training enabled him to obtain in 1980 a Canada Art Council grant to study at the International School of stringed instruments making in Cremona, Italy. After graduating in 1984, he earned a certificate of merit for one of his violins from the Violin Society of America. Back in Montréal Jean-Benoît Stensland opened a workshop with luthier Thérèse Girard. He has developed techniques based on the Italian classical school, striving for a particular ideal tone while focusing on the visual aesthetics of the instrument. To date, Jean-Benoît Stensland has made more than 350 instruments including fourty violoncellos, one of which is part of the collection of the Canadian Museam of Civilisations.

Jean-Benoît Stensland commence son apprentissage en 1976, chez le luthier Montréalais Antoine Robichaud. En 1980 il obtient une bourse du Conseil des Arts du Canada pour étudier à l'École internationale de lutherie de Crémone. En 1984, il reçoit son diplôme et, la même année, un certicat de mérite lui sera décerné pour un de ses violons par la Violin Society of America. De retour à Montréal, Jean-Benoît Stensland ouvre un atelier avec le luthier Thérèse Girard. Il développe des techniques personnelles, s'inspirant de l'école italienne. Ce qui lui permet de travailler à un certain idéal sonore tout en valorisant l'aspect esthétique de l'instrument. Jusqu'à présent, Jean-Benoît Stensland a fabriqué plus de 250 instruments incluant une quarantaine de violoncelles dont un qui fait maintenant partie de la collection permanente du Musée Canadien des Civilisations.
